| The AMBIENTE research
division has been active in the field of hybrid games since the
beginning of 2003. We strive to bring together the best elements
of traditional games such as board games and computer entertainment
forming a new class of hybrid games with numerous opportunities
for innovation in game design. We are investigating various means
of bridging the gap between the real world and the virtual world
in terms of sensing technologies and smart game boards.
Point of Departure
Traditional board games emphasize the direct interaction between
human players. They sit together around the same table, look at
each other and interpret facial expressions and gestures which help
them understand the others’ actions and make up a rich social
situation. However, when complex game rules, or multi-sensual stimulation
is desired, the static nature of traditional board game media prohibits
the realization of believable and immersive game concepts.
On the other hand, playing computer games introduces many highly
interesting possibilities that enhance the playing experience. Game
presentation is enriched with audio and visual support and game
content is limited only by the imagination of the developers. Players
can get immediate feedback on their actions in the game world which
fosters emotional involvement and the feeling of immersion into
the game. The drawback of computer games, however, is the lack of
social interaction in a face to face setting.
Hybrid games represent a new type of games that augment the human
centered group situation of traditional tabletop games with the
advantages of computing technology to realize new gaming experiences.
Research Focus
Developing games for hybrid setups requires a deeper understanding
of game design and game mechanics, because there are physical, social
and virtual aspects to take into account, thus introducing a new
dimension of complexity. We therefore develop conceptual models
and carry out evaluation studies regarding novel game designs.
As a testbed for hybrid games, we are working on novel interfaces
and interaction devices as well as on software infrastructures for
rapid prototyping and evaluation of concepts.
Our software platform integrates multiple different interaction
devices such as handheld computers or smart game boards. Our entire
hybrid games are based on this multimodal interaction and software
framework which helps dealing with anticipated future interaction
trends.
To prepare for a successful commercial exploitation of hybrid games,
we are also investigating hardware setups that combine low cost
dedicated components with standard devices such as mobile phones
users already own. This way, viable business models can be developed.
